The mountain town of Smithers is located in northwestern B.C. directly on the Trans Canada Yellowhead Highway (Route 16), approximately half way between Prince Rupert and Prince George. The Bulkley River borders Smithers and lends its name to the valley. Smithers is set against the backdrop of the Hudson Bay Mountain and with vistas of the Babine and Telkwa Mountain Ranges.

Nearly 6,000 people call Smithers home and nearly 20,000 live in the surrounding valley and rural communities. Smithers is a service centre and offers more amenities than you might expect for a town its size. Smithers is a vibrant community comprised of First Nations, second and third generation descendents of European settlers, along with new residents from around the globe.

Smithers is growing, attracting young families and retirees who are drawn not only to economic opportunities, but also to the abundant amenities of the Bulkley Valley. These include high number of quality medical facilities, great schools, world-class outdoor recreation opportunities, and a vibrant arts and culture scene. Smithers is more than a place to work – it’s a place to put down roots, a town with a quality of life that is simply exceptional.

Work: From large employers in the resources sector to small-scale entrepreneurs and innovative social enterprises, Smithers has created a strong community economy. Smithers is known nationally as a hub for the exploration industry, with a significant cluster of drilling, expediting and related support industries. Smithers has the 2nd highest number of PhD’s per capita in the province and is home to four locally started $50 million dollar companies who maintain their headquarters there.

Play: Smithers offers outstanding outdoor recreational pursuits during all phases of the year. This includes fishing and hunting, downhill and cross-country skiing, golfing, snowmobiling, canoeing and kayaking and many more.

Culture: Coupled with a lively music scene, Art Gallery, Museum, theatrical performances and an energetic sporting community, Smithers has something for everyone. Because of its alpine environment, the town has adopted an ‘alpine theme’. Main Street was reconstructed in 1979 with red brick sidewalks and alpine style rooflines on buildings and shops.
