A bustling community on the North Coast of British Columbia, Prince Rupert is the only municipality that sits inside the Great Bear Rainforest. Due to its unique location on Kaien Island, Prince Rupert provides unparalleled access to outdoor adventure; from hiking, backpacking, fishing, and camping, to kayaking, boating, grizzly tours, and whale watching, Prince Rupert is a playground for outdoor and wildlife enthusiasts. And for those with a taste for winter adventures, world-class backcountry and Nordic skiing are just an hour away down the Skeena River at Shames Mountain and Onion Lake trails.
There is more to Prince Rupert than outdoor adventure, however. Prince Rupert also has a thriving arts & culture, not-for-profit, and heritage sector, with two celebrated museums—the Museum of Northern British Columbia and the North Pacific Cannery Historic Site—that bring artists, history buffs, and cultural tourists to the region. Community events, performances, and festivals are also a mainstay in this remote Northern community, with Seafest occurring in early June, Winterfest in December, as well as the Udderfest community theatre festival and many concerts and performances at the Lester Centre for the Arts keeping residents busy throughout the year.
Prince Rupert is also a gateway for international trade, with the Port of Prince Rupert employing over 3,100 people from the community and continuing to expand. Operating a container, grain, and coal terminal, the Port of Prince Rupert has put this remote community on the international economic stage by earning the title of North America’s fastest growing port and competing directly with larger ports in Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Seattle. It’s not all about big business though: the boutique shopping district in Cow Bay means residents can stroll along the public breakwater while perusing well-curated local shops.
